NETTIE HORN è lieta di annunciare Dysfuncadelia, la prima personale in Gran Bretagna dell’artista Debbie Lawson. Per l’occasione sarà presentata un’elaborata installazione composta di lavori scultorei, oltre ad una selezione di pannelli in legno intarsiato.
Debbie Lawson crea ambientazioni atipiche attraverso l’uso di oggetti trovati, arredamenti familiari e materiali domestici quali tappeti o legni “Persiani“.
Un nuovo significato, ibrido, legato all’utilizzo di questi materiali «kitsch» presenti sia nelle sculture che nelle installazioni, va rintracciato lontano dalla loro intrenseca qualità decorativa. Tinti di una leggera nostalgia, sia collettiva che individale, legata alle memorie di interni domestici ed a scene di vita suburbana, questi oggetti ordinari diventano parte di una “mise en scène” la cui struttura narrativa si fonda sulla nostra storia e sulla nostra memoria personale.
L’incontro inaspettato tra materia e oggetto rivela una seconda vita, alternativa, in linea con le peculiari qualitá messe in luce dall’artista.
Per la sua personale, Lawson trasforma entrambe le stanze della galleria in due diverse ambientazioni, create appositamente grazie all’uso dei suoi materiali preferiti.
Modificandosi lentamente in una casa-giungla, la stanza principale erompe in un opulento paesaggio costituito da oggetti e materiali di arredamento che, coperti da tappeti, danno vita ad una flora immaginaria e fantastica. Giocando sull’idea di una collisione tra elementi etereogenei, Lawson crea un’illusione ottica attraverso l’associazione di pattern ritmici e forme tridimensionali.
Contaminando gradualmente lo spazio e invadendo la stanza queste piante, ibride e personalizzate, creano un nuovo genere di vegetazione, in uno spazio mutato dimensionalmente. Piante fuori misura, spaventose e allo stesso tempo grottesche, rivelano con ironia un universo che trae la propria ispirazione da diversi codici espressivi.
Il suo grande trittico di legno intarsiato, dalla forma irregolare, sovverte l‘associazione al carattere “gentile” di un’arte tradizionale per virare in paesaggi inquietanti. Contaminate dalla materia che ci circonda, narrativa popolare e storie personali si intrecciano, così che lo spazio dell’immaginazione e quello della realtà materiale finiscano per sembrare inseparabili.

NETTIE HORN is pleased to present Dysfuncadelia, the first UK solo show of artist Debbie Lawson which features an elaborate installation of sculptural works as well as a selection of inlaid wood panels.
Debbie Lawson creates atypical environments through the use of found objects, household furniture and domestic materials such as “Persian” carpet and wood. A new hybrid meaning is found in the use of these « kitsch » materials in her sculptures and installations away from their inherent decorative quality. Tinged by a collective and personal nostalgia linked to memories of the domestic interior and suburban life, these humdrum objects become part of a “mise en scène” which is created thanks to the narrative formed by our own history and memories. The encounter between the material and the object reveals a dramatic other life according to what the artist saw as its own particular aspirational quality.
For her solo exhibition, Lawson turns both rooms of the gallery into two different environments specifically created through the use of her materials of predilection.
Slowly growing into a jungle-house, the main room erupts into a lush landscape of carpeted stacks dripping with leaves and smothered in all kinds of fanciful flora made from different objects and furniture. Playing on the idea of collision between heterogeneous elements, Lawson creates an optical illusion through the association of a rhythmic pattern to a three-dimensional form.
Gradually contaminating the space and invading the room, these personified hybrid plants create a new genre of the exotic in a dimensionally mutated space. These oversized plants, at once startling but also grotesque, reveal with humour a universe which sources its inspiration from suggestive and affective codes.
Her full size “wobbly” triptych panel inlaid with marquetry subverts the polite associations of a traditional craft into a warped landscape of wilted leaves. Merged with the stuff that surrounds us, popular narratives and personal histories are intertwined so that the imaginary and material reality seem inseparable.
Debbie Lawson lives and works in London and graduated with an MA from the Royal College of Art in 2004.
